Rust Inhibitive Phenolic Modified Alkyd Primer

PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS:

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
HJ-1909 is a rust inhibitive, phenolic modified alkyd primer, designed as a shop coat or field primer for structural steel and
other metal substrates. It has been specifically formulated for compatibility with Fireproofing materials,
strong solvent base paints and mastics, which may lift or blister other primer coatings.
RECOMMENDED USES:
HJ-1909 is recommended for use whenever a top quality metal primer is required. Primary applications are for installations to
be fireproofed with solvent based fireproofing coatings or mastic systems such as HJ-180 when such fireproofing will
be exposed to weathering, humid or corrosive environments.
PHYSICAL PROPTIES:
DRYING TIME: Air Dry Ð 15 minutes. WEIGHT/GALLON: 11.80 to 12.00 lbs.
RECOAT: Two hours between coats. SOLIDS BY WEIGHT: 66% ± 3%
PACKAGING: 1 gallon, 5 gallon and SOLIDS BY VOLUME: 60% ± 3%
55-gallon containers. COVAGE: 962 - 3 sq. ft. per gallon
COLOR: Red WET FILM THICKNESS: 2.00 - 5.0 Mils
GLOSS: Flat DRY FILM THICKNESS: 1.0 - 3.0 Mils
SOLVENT: Aromatic Solvents VISCOSITY: 40 - 50 sec. #4 Zahn Cup
FLASH POINT (TCC): 58û F (14û C)
APPLICATION:
Recommended Thickness: Surface profiles and porosity should be considered when determining coverage rates. For use
under normal interior conditions, apply 1 to 1-1/2 mils DFT at a theoretical coverage rate of 962 to 641 square feet per gallon.
For corrosive or exterior exposures, apply at 2 to 3 mils DFT at a theoretical coverage rate of 481 to 3 square feet per
gallon. Application may be made by brush, roller or spray gun using standard equipment and techniques.
Surface Preparation: Surface preparation should follow the recommendations of the .
In general, standard instructions for painting metal surfaces apply: Be sure surfaces are clean of all dust, rust, mill scale,
grease, oil, or other foreign residue thatmay impair adhesion. Sandblasting is required when the surface is encrusted with
rust, scale or other bond inhibiting residue not readily removed by hand or chemical means. In areas where sandblasting is
not permitted or feasible, power cleaning for steel (SSPC-SP3-63) is recommended.
Thinning: For brush application, dilute 4 parts HJ-1909 with one part high flash naphtha. For spray application dilute 4
parts HJ-1909 with one part toluene, xylene, or similar aromatic solvents.

APPLICATION (cont.):
Dry Time: HJ-1909 is a fast-drying primer. Best results require at least 48-72 hours of curing time prior to overcoating
with heavy-bodied mastics. Allow a minimum drying time of 4 hours at room temperature if overcoating with a thinner paint
film such as HJ-107A.
Clean-up: Clean brushes, rollers and spray equipment promptly with toluene, xylene or similar aromatic solvents.
Storage: Store in tightly closed containers. Keep between 40-90û F (4-32û C)
Packaging: 1,5, & 55 gallon containers.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:
HJ-1909 Primer contains flammable solvents. Never apply material near open flame or excessive heat. Proper ventilation
should be provided especially in enclosed areas. Avoid prolonged breathing of vapor and repeated contact with skin. For
safety and health information on HJ-1909, please refer to our current Material Safety Data Sheet.
